| Comments: | This year we decided to do something different for the Wrap. At Temple Beth El, bar/bat mitzvah children and their families attend our regular morning minyan on the Thursday before the Shabbat of the event. All boys and some girls put on tefillin at this service. Fathers should do so as well, of course, but many of them haven’t done so since their own bar mitzvahs. We therefore aimed this year’s Wrap at fathers with upcoming bar/bat mitzvahs, to help them deepen their spiritual bonds with them, and perfect their own “tefillin skills,” at the Wrap. Our Chazzan, Martin Leubitz, agreed to present a program about talit, tefillin, the structure of the morning service, and lead the tefillin instruction. In addition to various traditional forms of publicity (announcements in synagogue publications, flyers, announcements at services, etc.) we called every father of an upcoming bar/bat mitzvah, explained the purpose of the wrap and the program, and personally invited them. We had a more successful program than previously, with twenty people (including two women) attending, half with some experience in putting on tefillin, the other half without. Everyone thought the program was beneficial and successful, and our chazzan agrees that to help reinforce the tefillin instruction, we should run a similar event at least twice a year, if not more. |
